Tai Chi Practice Sessions
- Released on Jul 10, 2012
Due to the success of the previous Tai Chi classes, the Confucius Institute will once again sponsor Tai Chi classes this summer.
This class is designed for people who have had a class through the Confucius Institute before (Fall prevention, beginner I, beginner II) or have had other instruction in Tai Chi. Instructor approval is required to enroll. This will be a class where all students will play Tai Chi Chuan together for about 40 minutes; the other 20 minutes will be used for warm ups, cool downs and guided instruction about 1) how to perform positions that may be new to all students and 2) tips about how to improve each individual student’s practice of Tai Chi, since all students are expected to be at a different ability level. The class is not designed to teach any particular form by the end of the class, but students will be playing Yang 24, 42, and 48 as a way to deepen their understanding of Tai Chi and their own ability levels. Students who cannot perform these forms alone will be able to follow them with the instructor leading and learn some of the new steps in them, but the class will not be designed to teach these forms in sequence with the goal of having students able to perform them alone at the end of the session. However, a dedicated student would likely be able to add a sequence to his/her repertoire. (Note: This class will not be appropriate for someone who has never taken any Tai Chi instruction before; such students should enroll either in beginner I Tai Chi or Tai Chi for Fall Prevention to learn foundational information that will not be taught in the Tai Chi Practice Sessions.) To assist students in learning and following the forms, these practice sessions will be taught in a room with mirrors.
